GOVERNOR GENERAL LOUISE ARBOUR PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION 100TH ANNIVERSARY
NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL (OTTAWA)
JULY 17, 2026

“For 100 years, The Royal Canadian Legion has ensured that the service and sacrifice of Canada’s Veterans are neither forgotten nor taken for granted.
“This historic anniversary honours generations of Veterans, Legionnaires and volunteers who have carried forward the sacred responsibility of Remembrance. As the Legion enters its second century, we must continue passing the torch to younger generations while ensuring that no Veteran, family or unsung hero is left behind.”

OTTAWA, NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL: Veterans, Legionnaires, dignitaries, youth representatives and members of the public gathered today at the National War Memorial in Ottawa to commemorate the 100th anniversary of The Royal Canadian Legion.
Her Excellency the Right Honourable Louise Arbour, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, participated in the national ceremony, delivered remarks and laid a wreath in recognition of the Legion’s century of service and Remembrance.
The ceremony marked the official anniversary of the Legion’s incorporation on July 17, 1926. For the past century, the organization has advocated for Canada’s Veterans and their families, preserved the memory of those who served and sacrificed, and supported communities throughout Canada.
The national observance was accompanied by a centenary celebration at Ottawa City Hall, including the unveiling of a special Canada Post commemorative stamp marking the Legion’s 100th anniversary.
Across Canada, Legion Branches are marking the milestone throughout the weekend with commemorative ceremonies, open houses, community gatherings, barbecues and other special activities. These local events recognize the essential role Legion Branches have played in supporting Veterans, strengthening communities and creating places of fellowship from coast to coast to coast.
The Legion enters its second century with more than 300,000 members following significant membership growth during its centenary year. Its continuing work includes Veteran advocacy, financial assistance, housing and wellness support, youth programs, community service and the annual National Poppy Campaign.
The Merchant Navy Commemorative Theme Project and Memoria Global extend their congratulations to The Royal Canadian Legion, its Dominion and Provincial Commands, local Branches, members and volunteers on this once-in-a-century milestone.
The centenary provides an opportunity not only to celebrate the Legion’s distinguished history, but also to renew Canada’s commitment to Veterans of every generation, including members of the Canadian Armed Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Allied Veterans, Merchant Navy Veterans and those currently serving.
Lest We Forget.
