HONOURING THE ENDURING CONTRIBUTIONS
OF CANADIAN WOMEN IN SERVICE
JANUARY 26, 2026

“Women have served Canada with courage, professionalism, and quiet determination in times of war and peace. Their contributions—often carried out without recognition—have been essential to our national security, our humanitarian values, and the strength of our democracy. We honour their service, remember their sacrifice, and commit to preserving their legacy for future generations.”
— Stéphane Ouellette, President & CEO, MNCTP
OTTAWA —The Merchant Navy Commemorative Theme Project (MNCTP) recognizes the vital and enduring role women have played in Canada’s history—contributing to the nation’s security, resilience, and democratic foundations through service in times of war and peace.
Throughout Canada’s military, maritime, and humanitarian history, women have served with distinction as nurses, medics, logisticians, intelligence professionals, communicators, administrators, and leaders. Their service has extended from the front lines and hospitals to operational centres and the home front, where they ensured continuity, care, and stability under extraordinary circumstances.
The sacrifice of Canadian Army Nursing Sisters during the First World War, including those lost aboard HMHS Llandovery Castle, remains a solemn reminder of the risks women have borne in service to others. Their dedication reflected professional excellence, humanitarian commitment, and courage—values that continue to guide service today.
Beyond uniformed service, women have played a central role in advancing Canadian society. Milestones such as the achievement of women’s suffrage strengthened democratic institutions and expanded civic participation, enabling women to contribute fully to public service, governance, and community leadership across the country.
Today, women continue to serve Canada across the Canadian Armed Forces, the Merchant Navy, allied militaries, emergency services, law enforcement, intelligence, healthcare, and humanitarian sectors. Their leadership, expertise, and dedication remain indispensable to Canada’s national security and international engagement.
Through its commemorative, educational, and public engagement initiatives, MNCTP remains committed to honouring the service and sacrifice of women—past, present, and future—ensuring their contributions are recognized, remembered, and carried forward as an integral part of Canada’s national story.
