MAY 3, 2025

King Charles and Queen Camilla joined other royals on the Buckingham Palace balcony as the Red Arrows flew overhead to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day
“It was a privilege to join the Sons of Scotland Pipe Band in Ottawa for their VE Day commemoration — a meaningful tribute that honoured the courage, unity, and sacrifice that defined the Second World War.
"The war had been a battle for the very survival of freedom and human dignity, won through the unwavering resolve of those who served at home and abroad.
"Congratulations to the Sons of Scotland for organizing such a successful and dignified event that ensured these vital stories continue to inspire generations to come.”

OTTAWA, MAY 3, 2025 – Mr. Stéphane Ouellette, President and CEO, MNCTP, joined the spirited Victory in Europe (VE) Day commemoration that payed tribute to the courage, unity, and sacrifice that led to the end of the Second World War in Europe 80 years ago.
Held with reverence, music, and reflection, the Ottawa event brought together veterans, dignitaries, descendants, and members of the public to honour those who served and fell in the fight for freedom and democracy.
VE Day is recognized around the world as a day to remember the moment Allied forces accepted Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender, effectively ending the war in Europe. In 2025, nations across the Commonwealth and beyond — including the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, and Canada — hosted ceremonies and educational initiatives to commemorate the 80th anniversary of this historic milestone.
The Second World War was fought not only on battlefields, but in convoys, shipyards, factories, and homes. It was a struggle for liberty, the preservation of democratic values, and the defence of human dignity. Events like the Ottawa ceremony serve as reminders of the price paid for peace and the responsibility of future generations to protect it.
The Merchant Navy Commemorative Theme Project continues its mission to preserve and promote the stories of Canadian and Allied Merchant Mariners, and to advance national remembrance through civic education, advocacy, and community partnerships.
