OTTAWA, TODAY – Mr. Stéphane Ouellette, President and Chief Executive Officer, Merchant Navy Commemorative Theme Project (MNCTP), announced the creation of The Honourable Senator Joseph A. Day Leadership Excellence Award in recognition of his stalwart dedication to the cause of the Allied Merchant Navy and American Merchant Marine Veterans.

Over the last decade, The Senate of Canada, through the office of Senator Day, has provided support excellence in advancing the cause of our unsung sailors and other forgotten military and civilian wartime heroes/heroines. From sponsoring Bill C–411, An Act to establish Merchant Navy Veterans Day (establishing September 3 as the national day of remembrance for the Merchant Navy) hosting several MN Day of Remembrance receptions in The Senate Foyer, attending various ceremonies/events on behalf of The Senate of Canada, to providing on–going administrative and logistical support from his Senate Office, Senator Day’s statesmanship is nothing less than praiseworthy.

On October 4, 2001, Senator Day was appointed to the Senate by The Right Honourable Jean Chrétien. Senator Day represents the province of New Brunswick and the Senatorial Division of Saint John–Kennebecasis.

On November 18, 2014, Senator Day was appointed as the Chair, Board of Honorary Governors, MNCTP, by Mr. Ouellette.
