MR. WILLIAM R. BLACK, CD, PRESIDENT, KOREA VETERANS ASSOCIATION OF CANADA

"It is both humbling and inspiring to stand within the Senate Chambers among those who continue to uphold Canada’s traditions of service and remembrance. The Ceremony of Remembrance reminds us that freedom has always come at a cost, paid by generations of men and women—at sea, on land, and in the air—whose courage continues to guide our nation’s conscience and our collective sense of duty.”
– Stéphane Ouellette, President and CEO, MNCTP
OTTAWA, NOVEMBER 7, 2025: Mr. Stéphane Ouellette, President and Chief Executive Officer, Merchant Navy Commemorative Theme Project (MNCTP), joined Parliamentarians, members of the Canadian Armed Forces, veterans, diplomats, and invited guests at the 26th Annual Ceremony of Remembrance, held at the Senate of Canada.
This solemn national ceremony stands as a deeply moving tribute to all those who have served Canada in times of war, conflict, and peace. Held within the historic and dignified setting of the Senate Chamber, the commemoration featured heartfelt reflections, a moment of silence, and the ceremonial laying of wreaths—timeless gestures of gratitude that honour the fallen and reaffirm the nation’s enduring commitment to remembrance.
The MNCTP extends its profound gratitude to The Senate of Canada for more than twenty years of steadfast support and leadership in honouring Allied Merchant Navy Veterans and the American Merchant Marine. This long-standing partnership has ensured that the vital role of merchant mariners—who sustained the lifelines of liberty during wartime—remains firmly anchored within Canada’s national commemorative narrative and recognized beyond its shores.
The Senate’s leadership in remembrance is further reflected through The Honourable Senator Joseph A. Day Leadership Excellence Award, named in recognition of Senator Joseph A. Day, former Leader of the Senate Liberals. Established by the MNCTP in January 2020, the award honours Senator Day’s exemplary leadership and his commitment to the principles of good governance, public service, and democracy—values for which Canada’s veterans bravely served and sacrificed.
