UNITED NATIONS, INTERNATIONAL MARITIME ORGANIZATION (IMO) CELEBRATES WORLD MARITIME DAY

SEPTEMBER 26, 2024

"When we think about safety in maritime, the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) is one of the first things that comes to mind. 2024 marks 50 years since the treaty was adopted. We can be proud of the crucial role this Convention has played in setting international safety standards for ship construction, equipment and operation, preventing maritime disasters and protecting lives. But we cannot be complacent.

"This year's World Maritime Day theme: "Navigating the future: safety first!" calls for collective effort to ensure we keep pace with the ongoing transformation in shipping. And at IMO, we must ensure the continued development and implementation of the regulatory regime to prioritize safety as we steer towards tomorrow.

"I encourage all stakeholders to mark this year's World Maritime Day on 26 September and invite you to join the conversation online using the hashtag #WorldMaritimeDay. Let us all work to navigate the future with safety first!"

 – Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General, International Maritime Organization

“Shipping has been a constant force in human development, from imperial expansion to the World Wars, where the merchant navy was a crucial lifeline. During WWII, the Allied Merchant Navy and American Merchant Marine suffered the highest casualties across all services and were key to the Allied victory.

“Seafaring remains one of the most dangerous and vital jobs, essential for global security, defense, and prosperity. It’s time we show our gratitude to the brave mariners who risk their lives at sea, allowing us to enjoy life on shore.”

– Stéphane Ouellette, President & CEO, MNCTP

OTTAWA, TODAY – Mr. Stéphane Ouellette, President and Chief Executive Officer, Merchant Navy Commemorative Theme Project (MNCTP), joined members of the international shipping community in celebrating World Maritime Day.

About World Maritime Day 2024

This year's World Maritime Day theme, "Navigating the Future: Safety First!" emphasizes the importance of a united effort to keep up with the rapid transformation in the shipping industry. As technology continues to evolve, the focus is on ensuring that safety remains the top priority.

This significant theme highlights the need for regulatory frameworks that adapt to new advancements, safeguarding both maritime workers and the global supply chains they support. By placing safety at the forefront, the industry aims to meet the challenges of modernization while ensuring the well-being of all involved in maritime operations.

Our seaborne trade accounts for 90% of the world’s food, fuel, raw material, and manufactured goods that are delivered to every corner of the globe. This worldwide shipping network is interconnected by over 100,000 commercial vessels, and consists of 2,800 ports within 150 countries. Over 1.5 million seafarers operate, maintain, and repair these massive ships, while simultaneously fighting rough seas, risking their lives through piracy and war zones, and sacrificing quality time with their families.
