TODAY WE REMEMBER THE ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOR
DECEMBER 7, 2023

“…The stories of the Greatest Generation’s ultimate courage and commitment continue to inspire an enduring sense of unity and purpose throughout our Nation. They remind us that, in the darkest of moments, we have the power to bend the arc of history toward a freer and more just future. They remind us that, from death, destruction, and division, we can build a better world — one grounded in peace and security. They remind us that the forces of tyranny and terrorism are no match for the flame of liberty that burns in the hearts of free people everywhere. Above all, they remind us that every generation can – and must – defeat democracy’s mortal foes.”
– President Joseph R. Biden Jr, 46th President of The United States of America, A Proclamation on National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, 2023 – The White House
OTTAWA, TODAY – Mr. Stéphane Ouellette, President and Chief Executive Officer, Merchant Navy Commemorative Theme Project (MNCTP), remembered the more than 2,400 Americans that were killed, and over 1,200 injured, during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
On December 7, 1941, over 300 Japanese airplanes attacked the naval base near Honolulu, Hawaii. This delivered a major blow to the nation’s Pacific Fleet, annihilated more than 300 planes, and destroyed or seriously damaged nearly
20 ships. Although the Japanese Empire focused on the destruction of the Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor, the attack encompassed the entire island with assaults on Army and Marine aviation bases as well as civilian facilities. This dreadful event changed the course of history, and catapulted the United States of America into World War II.
In 1994, the United States Congress designated December 7 of each year as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. The joint resolution was signed by President Bill Clinton, on August 23, 1994. On November 29, President Clinton issued a proclamation declaring December 7, 1994, the first National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
