AT THE FAIRMONT CHÂTEAU LAURIER
NOVEMBER 3, 2025

“Algeria’s National Day reminds us that the pursuit of freedom, dignity, and sovereignty is a universal and timeless endeavour. The resilience shown on November 1, 1954 continues to inspire nations around the world striving to build societies grounded in justice, self-determination, and shared humanity. On behalf of the Merchant Navy Commemorative Theme Project (MNCTP), we are honoured to stand with the people of Algeria in celebrating this historic occasion and in strengthening the bonds of friendship between our nations.”
– Stéphane Ouellette, President and CEO, MNCTP
OTTAWA, NOVEMBER 3, 2025: Mr. Stéphane Ouellette, President and Chief Executive Officer, Merchant Navy Commemorative Theme Project (MNCTP), joined distinguished diplomats, government officials, and community representatives in commemorating Algeria’s Independence Day at the Fairmont Château Laurier.
Hosted by His Excellency Noureddine SIDI ABED, Ambassador of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to Canada, the gathering honoured Algeria’s remarkable path to nationhood and celebrated the enduring friendship between Canada and Algeria.
Recognizing November 1, 1954 — A Pivotal Moment in Algerian History
Algeria’s National Day marks November 1, 1954, the launch of the National Liberation Movement and the beginning of the Algerian War of Independence. On this historic day, the National Liberation Front (FLN) issued its declaration calling for an end to colonial rule, igniting a struggle that ultimately led to Algeria’s independence in 1962.
More than a national anniversary, November 1 symbolizes:
- The resolve and unity of the Algerian people
- A powerful commitment to dignity, sovereignty, and self-determination
- A defining milestone in modern anti-colonial history
Strengthening Bonds and Shared Values
This commemoration reaffirmed the strong and growing relationship between Canada and Algeria — grounded in mutual respect, international cooperation, and shared values of peace, freedom, and democratic aspiration.
It also reflects the MNCTP’s broader mission of fostering global remembrance, cross-cultural understanding, and unity among nations that honour those who have sacrificed for independence, security, and human dignity.
