HONOURING THE EDMUND FITZGERALD: A TRIBUTE TO COURAGE, SERVICE, AND SHARED REMEMBRANCE
NOVEMBER 10, 2025

“Every captain knew it was his job to deliver cargo as cheaply and as quickly as possible," one Great Lakes captain commented long after the loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald, "and if you didn't measure up, the company would replace you with a captain who would measure up.”
– Michael Schumacher, Author, Mighty Fitz: The Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald
“The Edmund Fitzgerald represents more than a ship lost to the storm—it stands as a symbol of courage, service, and resilience shared by all who have faced the sea and served their nation. Through remembrance, we honour their sacrifice and strengthen the bonds of unity and understanding that carry their legacy forward.”
– Stéphane Ouellette, President and CEO, MNCTP
OTTAWA, TODAY: The Merchant Navy Commemorative Theme Project (MNCTP) joins Canadians and the international maritime community in solemn remembrance of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald and her 29 crew members, lost on Lake Superior on this day in 1975.
Half a century later, the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald remains one of the most powerful testaments to courage, professionalism, and sacrifice at sea. Her loss continues to unite mariners, veterans, and citizens in shared reflection—reminding us of the strength and solidarity that emerge from service and remembrance.
Through its expanding national and international initiatives, the MNCTP continues to honour service, preserve shared memory, and strengthen unity through remembrance. From the recent attendance of the Senate of Canada’s Annual Ceremony of Remembrance to collaborations with veterans’ organizations, maritime institutions, and diplomatic missions, the MNCTP reaffirms Canada’s leadership in commemorating those who sustained the lifelines of liberty during war, conflict, and peace.
Following the 20th Anniversary of Merchant Navy Veterans Day (2025) and the momentum of Operation Unity, the MNCTP is now preparing to expand its reach through a series of new projects set for 2026. These include the development of Memoria Global, an emerging international framework for remembrance and civic engagement, and to celebrate exceptional contributions to remembrance, leadership, and public service.
The 2026 commemorative season will also feature significant maritime and military observances, including: The Battle of Moreuil Wood; Titanic: Echoes of a Giant; Empress of Ireland; HMHS Llandovery Castle; The Battle of the St. Lawrence; and Merchant Navy Veterans' Day tributes—each reflecting MNCTP’s mission to bring history to life through collaboration, education, and shared respect for those who served.
Together, these initiatives mark a new era of remembrance—one rooted in unity, gratitude, and the enduring values of courage, service, and peace.
Quick Facts
- The Fitzgerald was named after a CEO of Northwestern Mutual, and was christened by his wife.
- Sailing alongside another laker, the S.S. Arthur M. Anderson, the Fitzgerald was expecting a normal voyage on November 9. Its captain, E.R. McSorley, was a life– long sailor, and was accustomed to severe winter conditions.
- Around 2pm the next day, the two ships changed their route to avoid a storm on the south shore of lake Superior. McSorley radioed the Anderson, which was travelling a few miles behind, around 5pm to say they were taking on water.
- The Fitzgerald suddenly vanished from sight and radar around 7pm. An investigation by the U.S. Coast Guard concluded that the cargo vessel sank around 7:15pm just 27 kilometres from the entrance to Whitefish Bay, MI. "No distress call was heard by vessels or shore stations," the report stated.
- With a surface area of 82,000 square kilometres, Lake Superior is the biggest of the five lakes and is considered the most dangerous. Bordered by Ontario, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, Superior is especially hazardous in the winter when snow and winds sweep in from the mainland.
