OTTAWA, TODAY —  On this day, Canadians and people around the world commemorate the 81st anniversary of D-Day, a defining moment in the Second World War that changed the course of history. On June 6, 1944, Allied forces launched the largest amphibious invasion ever seen, storming the beaches of Normandy to liberate occupied Europe and restore hope to millions.

The Merchant Navy Commemorative Theme Project (MNCTP) joins in this global act of remembrance to honour the extraordinary courage of those who took part in this monumental operation—soldiers, sailors, airmen, and the merchant mariners who braved dangerous waters to deliver troops and vital supplies to the front lines.
