81ST ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY AND

THE BATTLE OF NORMANDY

JUNE 6, 2025

“On D-Day, brave souls stormed the shores of Normandy not just to liberate a continent, but to forge a future rooted in freedom. Their courage turned the tide of history and reminds us that liberty’s cost is eternal vigilance. Today, we honour their sacrifices and reaffirm our commitment to peace, justice, and the values for which they fought.”

– Stéphane Ouellette, President & CEO, MNCTP

OTTAWA, TODAY —  On this day, Canadians and people around the world commemorate the 81st anniversary of D-Day, a defining moment in the Second World War that changed the course of history. On June 6, 1944, Allied forces launched the largest amphibious invasion ever seen, storming the beaches of Normandy to liberate occupied Europe and restore hope to millions.

The Merchant Navy Commemorative Theme Project (MNCTP) joins in this global act of remembrance to honour the extraordinary courage of those who took part in this monumental operation—soldiers, sailors, airmen, and the merchant mariners who braved dangerous waters to deliver troops and vital supplies to the front lines. Their unwavering dedication and shared resolve embodied the values of freedom and democracy that remain the bedrock of our societies today.

As we reflect on the heroism and sacrifice of those who fought on D-Day and throughout the campaign, we also pay tribute to the often-overlooked merchant seafarers whose role was vital in ensuring the success of the mission and the Allied victory. Their resilience in the face of enemy attacks and unforgiving seas stands as a testament to the power of unity and determination.

The 81st anniversary of D-Day is not only a moment to remember—it is a call to action to uphold the values for which these brave individuals fought and to ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten. Let us carry forward their legacy with gratitude, respect, and a steadfast commitment to building a world worthy of their sacrifice.
